As you wander around the park you will see people in bright high vis jackets, hard hats, and signs of construction in parts still undergoing development as part of the restoration project, but not all the work involves machinery and noise!

Fruitful Labour

The Friends of Saughton Park's Fruit and Nut group are busy in amongst the more

visible works, preparing the way for the wonderful variety of flowers, trees and plants that are going to make sure the park and the walled garden is even more lusciously green and blooming lovely.

Recent activity saw the group, alongside Chris Macefield of The Orchard Project, in the park to wire up walls in preparation for the planting of a variety of fruit trees.

The weather may have been a little cold, but this wasn't a deterrent. With sterling support from the Parks team two walls within the Rose Garden were wired ready for the planting to commence. Quince, plum, pear, apple and peach trees were all planted on the planting day.

A great team effort between the Fruit and Nut group, Chris and the Parks team with well - planned days leading to some fantastic work achieved. Thanks to Chris especially for being instrumental in the planning and realisation of the days activities.

Upcoming Activities

A site by the Water of Leith near the bridge at the corner of Balgreen Road is designated for a wild orchard and a meeting will be held in late summer to work out the plans for the site. Date of meeting to be confirmed.

The group will be organising a family tree planting day in the autumn. This day will be open to all and as The Woodland Trust have kindly supplied 420 wild harvest trees. The more hands the better, so please come join in! Date of planting day to be confirmed.

Please see here for information on an upcoming visit to The Secret Herb Garden
